Experience and Empathy

“The ultimate aim of our coaching is to provide a better sporting experience for our children and young people.” Head Coach James Marshall.

James heads up our small team of coaches. He has over 30 years of coaching experience in many different environments: from after-school gymnastics to supporting national and international athletes at junior and senior levels.

He constantly seeks to improve his coaching practice through formal education and by learning from other coaches. His extensive network of coaching peers in Australia, the USA and Canada enables him to stay up to date with the latest coaching research.

He uses his own experiences (good and bad) as an athlete and competitor to provide a level of empathy with the people he coaches, whether they are a complete beginner, an injured footballer, or someone competing on the international stage. James has represented England at Shotokan Karate in the World Cup in Tokyo in 2004 and also Great Britain at the Masters Weightlifting World Championships in Finland in 2024.

Qualifications: MSc in Sports Coaching. Level 3 Weightlifting Coach, Level 2 Gymnastics Coach, Athletics Coach, Level 1 Volleyball Coach. Accredited Strength and Conditioning coach with the UKSCA and NSCA. Diploma in Sports Psychology.

Writer: He has written two books on coaching and training. ‘Training Young Athletes’ (2012) and ‘Coaches Corner’ (2024). He has also had over 60 articles about training and coaching published.
